We are dedicated to elevating practice through specialized training and support.

IDD Training Professionals began in 2019 to provide high-quality training for staff administering medications to individuals receiving support/funds from the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDS). All trainers are Certified Trainers receiving their certifications from Virginia Commonwealth University. In addition, IDD is a certified Train-the-Trainer facility, whereby we may train other nurses to teach the 32-hour Medication Administration classes.

IDD Training Professionals utilize/support different learning methods as needed by staff. Medication Administration trainers for HomeFree/SafeDose Pharmacy 32 hour online followed by in person checkoff for skills.

Registered Nurses/Certified Trainers can travel to your area to present the classes in person or to complete checkoffs if the online class with HomeFree and SafeDose Pharmacies is utilized. IDD Registered Nurses worked with HomeFree and SafeDose in the development of online training during the COVID-19 pandemic to maintain a safe environment and convenient scheduling for staff. Upon completion of the online class, a registered nurse will complete a checkoff for each staff member who is administering medications.

IDD Training Professionals have years of experience in the field of Intellectual Disabilities and Developmental Delay (IDD) and understand quality care and support Providers/Sponsors in developing quality health care and medication administration programs.

  • Linda Coley, RN, QDDP, has over 35 years of experience supporting individuals with a diagnosis of Intellectual Disabilities and Developmental Delays. She has experience in skilled nursing, ICF/IDD, staff development, and assisting individuals in transitioning from institutions to sponsored and group homes. She played a key role in developing the Medication Aide training program used for online training.

    Linda has also developed classes for individuals on oral care, Epi-Pen use, healthy eating, and diabetic testing. We believe individuals should learn how to care for themselves through education and support.

  • Joyce Ault, RN, QDDP, has over 20 years of experience supporting individuals and supervising staff who support individuals with IDD. She served as the lead nurse in developing presentations for state employees regarding Medication Aide Training. Joyce possesses a broad range of experience in the public health arena.

  • Lora Schwarz, BSN, ANP, QDDP, is a mother, heart and soul supporter of a beautiful son with Down Syndrome who has a waiver for services, requiring support and services supervised by DBHDS. She co-authored and produced the 32-hour Medication Aide training program utilized for the online training program. Lora has 10 years of experience working on developing training programs for the education of staff and individuals in specialized care.
